Overview

The short Langtang Valley Trek is the best way to maximize your trip in 6 days of time. If you are really looking forward to hiking in the mountains but will find it hard to manage the 8-10 days of time, then this short version of the trek to the Langtang Valley is for you.

Langtang Valley has been one of the main attractions of Nepal for the trekkers. The Langtang region is a must-visit place that offers a unique amalgamation of diverse landscapes, culture, friendly people, and rich flora and fauna. It is the perfect destination for those who have limited time and budget and especially for those who are just beginning to venture out into the world of hikes and treks. The easy trekking route will lead you through the beautiful hilly settlements filled with the alpine forest, reverberating rivers, and wildlife to the stunning snowy peaks of the Langtang Range.

An easy access from Kathmandu and a less crowded place that will make you experience the magical mountains such as Kyanjin Ri, Yala Peak, Langtang Lirung, etc. and close-up dive into the Tibetan-influenced culture through the first Himalayan national park of Nepal.

A thing to keep in mind is that this short trek caters to the physically fit people who can hike 9-10 hours a day. Despite being an easy trail, the reduction of two days means you will be covering more distance in a short time. Therefore, we suggest you prepare physically and mentally for a 6-day short trek to the Langtang Valley.

Highlights

  • Surround yourself with the 360° view of the snowy peaks like Langtang Lirung, Dorje Lakpa, Langshisha Ri, and many more.

  • Explore the historical stupa of Kyanjin Gompa Monastery

  • Enter Langtang National Park, a hotspot for wildlife and flora.

  • A short-duration trek that has a lot to offer.

Why is the short Langtang Valley Trek of 6 days a unique experience in 2024/2025?

The Langtang Valley will definitely captivate you and immerse all your senses in deep peace and tranquility. The journey to the top is full of beautiful scenery, happy locals, chirping birds, and some steep uphill climb that will render you breathless. And above all, it can be completed just within six days.

The Langtang region was one of the heavily impacted places by the 2015 earthquake. Many local people and tourists lost their lives because of it. There was massive devastation with the destruction of houses as well. But years later, the people of the Langtang have managed to rebuild their village and offer hospitality to the tourists.

The Langtang region and its people represent resilience. And if you are planning for a trek here, we definitely recommend it. And here are a few things you can be excited to see while on the Langtang Valley Trek.

Spiritual Kyanjin Village and Kyanjin Gompa Monastery

The Langtang Valley is a spiritually rich place. You will see the glimpse of Tibetan Buddhism in every step of the way. It will reflect on the lifestyle of the Tamang and Sherpas that reside along the trail. And one of the important landmarks on the trail is the Kyanjin Gompa Monastery, located in the Kyanjin village.

It is a century-old monastery that holds an utmost importance in the Buddhist community. Adorned with prayer flags, it definitely is a place for those who are specifically looking for a spiritual retreat and finding peace within themselves.

Summit the Kyanjin Ri and Tsergo Ri

Kyanjin Ri and Tsergo Ri are the two highest peaks you can climb while on the Langtang Valley Trek. Kyanjin Ri, at an elevation of 4772 meters, is what most trekkers prefer. It is more suitable in terms of both time and difficulty, as it only takes 4-5 hours to hike and is moderately easy. The expansive view from the top is unmatched, as you can see the entire Langtang Valley as well as the gorgeous mountains.

Tsergo Ri is at an altitude of 5,033 meters; it is an even more adventurous peak compared to Kyanjin Ri. That being said, it offers a bit more challenging climbing, which consumes more time. Therefore, you will require an extra day or two if you choose to climb this peak. But once you have reached the top, the view the peak offers is worthwhile.

Tamang Communities and the Culture

The natives of the Langtang Valley Trail are the Tamang ethnic groups, along with some Sherpas. Originally from Tibet, their livelihood reflects the Tibetan culture mixed with Nepalese flair. Tibetan Buddhism holds the highest significance in their life.

The Tamang communities are very tight knit and have a great sense of unity. Their unique culture and traditions will definitely get your attention. The walk around the settlements will give you some of the fondest memories of the trek. The main occupation of the people here is tourism but some are also involved in agriculture. There is also a cheese factory in Kyanjin, which is popular for its delicious yak cheese.

Panoramic Views of the Langtang Mountains

Langtang is one of the few places on Earth that offers a front-row seat to the gigantic Himalayas. At an elevation of 7,227 meters, Langtang Lirung is the tallest mountain in the entire region. Other notable peaks were Langshisha Ri (6,427 m), Langtang Ri (7,205 m), Yala Peak (5,520 m), Loenpo Gang (6,979 m), Kyunga Ri (6,601 m), Gangchenpo (6,387 m), and Dorje Lakpa (6,966 m).

Langtang National Park

With a total area of 1710 sq. km., Langtang National Park covers three districts: Rasuwa, Sindupalchwok, and Nuwakot. It was established in 1976 AD, making it the first ever Himalayan national park of Nepal. The major goal for its establishment was to conserve the flora and fauna that reside within the territory.

It houses 250 species of birds along with many rare and endangered species of animals, such as musk deer, Himalayan tahr, red panda, Himalayan black bear, snow leopard, wild dog, ghoral, serow, and many more.

What is the best season for the short Langtang Valley Trek?

Nepal has two major seasons for trekking, which are spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November). They offer a moderate climate with clear skies for the best views, which is preferred by most trekkers. While summer (June-August) and winter (Dec-Feb) are less preferred because of monsoon and cold, respectively. But winter is the perfect time to trek because it offers clear and unmatched views of the mountains.

While the monsoon is also good for those who want to see the absolute greenery, it is necessary to take precaution because it can be risky due to the possibility of landslides.

Difficulty and Distance of the Short 6 Days Langtang Valley Trek

The difficulty of the Langtang trek is classified as short and easy and suitable for all age groups. However, for this particular package, it involves intense hiking on the first day, which will not be easy for the beginners; instead, this trek can only be recommended for people who are physically fit and can trek for long hours in a day. You will have to hike 8–9 hours a day and since this trek is cut short, you will not have much time to acclimatize. Prepare yourself physically and mentally accordingly.

But you can look at the Langtang Valley Trek, which has 8 days and is the perfect destination if you are just venturing out on trekking. The gradual walk at a steady pace to acclimatize, along with proper diet and hydration, will make the trek a smooth experience.

Excluding Kyanjin Ri, the 6-Day Langtang Trek encompasses a total distance of 65 kilometers, or 40 miles. The total distance also increases to 77 kilometers, or 48 miles, with the addition of Kyanjin Ri. This distance can still go up if you include the other side missions like Kyanjin Gompa, Tserko Ri, etc. As a result, you will walk for seven to eight hours every day, or roughly ten kilometers, on average.

Permits, Trekking Guides and Porters

Permits

For this trek, you will be entering inside the Langtang National Park, which is why you will require a permit to get in. Along with the park entry permit, you will also need a Trekker’s Information Management System (TIMS) card that is issued by the tourism board.

  • Trekker’s Information Management System (TIMS):  $20
  • Langtang National Park Entry Fee: $30

Trekking Guides and Porters

As per the recent regulation imposed by the government of Nepal, a tourist must hire a registered trekking guide to trek to any trekking destination in Nepal. Hiring a guide can be very helpful, as they will show you the way, which minimizes the chances of getting lost and will make your hiking journey an insightful one with all their knowledge of their destination.

Hiring a porter is not mandatory; however, if you have heavy backpacks and you cannot carry on your own, the porters can come to your aid. Especially if you have much equipment and things that need to be carried, hiring a porter will be a good decision. They can carry anywhere from 20 to 25 kg.

  • Trekking Guide Cost: $35
  • Porter Cost: $25

Itinerary

Expand all +Collapse all -

The first day of your journey begins with a long ride to Syabrubesi from Kathmandu. After an early morning breakfast, you will get on a local bus that will lead you from the chaotic energy of Kathmandu to more secluded hilly areas with quaint villages and the Trishuli River as your guide.

You will enter the Rasuwa district and stop at Dhunche to get the entry permit for the Langtang National Park. And after 6 hours of some parts smooth and some parts bumpy, you will arrive at Syabrubesi, where you will be staying for the night.

  • Accommodation Type: Hotel
  • Driving time: 7-8 hrs
  • Meals: Lunch, and Dinner
  • Max. Elevation: 1,550m/5,086ft

Today is a day filled with adventure as you will officially begin your trek to the Langtang. As always, you will begin your day with an early breakfast to give you energy for hours of hiking. This is one of the longest hikes in this itinerary, so lace up your boots. Walking amidst the alpine forest filled with rhododendron and maple trees, you will be taking a breath of fresh air in every breath you take.

Today’s destination is Ghoretabela, which translates to horse stable in the English language. It is a settlement of a handful of tea houses that are there for the service of trekkers. Along the way, you might get a chance to see some wildlife like monkeys, Himalayan thar, and deer. Ghoretabela provides spectacular views of the surrounding landscapes.

  • Accommodation: Trekking Lodge
  • Trekking time: 7-8 hrs
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner (Included)
  • Max. Elevation: 3210m/10697ft

One of the major advantages of staying in Ghoretabela is that the trek to Kyanjin village will be short. Not only that, but the trail also gets a lot easier as the formidable uphill climb like the previous day will be very little. The trails are mostly straight with a few up-and-down hills.

After hiking for a few hours, you will reach the Langtang Village. You will also encounter the old Langtang Village, which was wiped out by the avalanche during the 2015 earthquake. You can stop at Langtang to explore a little, then be on your way to Kyanjin. This is one of those instances where the higher you go, the more mountains you will see.

Upon reaching the Kyanjin Village, you will be awestruck by the close proximity of the mountains with Langshisha Ri (6,427 m), Langtang Ri (7,205 m), Yala Peak (5,520 m), Loenpo Gang (6,979 m), Kyunga Ri (6,601 m), Gangchenpo (6,387 m), and Dorje Lakpa (6,966 m). It will be unlike anything you have ever seen. As you will reach the village relatively early, you will have enough time to explore the area and even get much-needed rest.

  • Accommodation: Trekking Lodge
  • Trekking time: 4-5 hrs
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner (Included)
  • Max. Elevation: 3870m/12697ft 3870m

The most anticipated day has finally arrived. Today you will have to wake up even earlier than usual. The goal is to witness a tear jerking sunrise from the summit of Kyanjin Ri. The hike to the top can be pretty tiring, but on the plus side, you will be carrying all the weight of your backpack like previous days. All you need is a bottle of warm water and a few protein bars to snack on along the way.

Once you have made your way to the top, you will be able to see not only the high snowy peaks of the Langtang range but the entirety of the Langtang Village as well. The summit draped with prayer flags will make you feel a sense of achievement. After spending some time at the top, you will hike back down to your hotel, have breakfast, and leave for Lama Hotel.

You will trace your steps back to the Lama Hotel. The route is mostly downhill; therefore, it will take less time to arrive here. There are limited hotels with very basic facilities, so you might have to adjust to some inconveniences.

Note: If you also want to summit Tsergo Ri, you will have to spend an extra day or two.

  • Accommodation: Trekking Lodge (Tea house)
  • Trekking time: 8-9 hrs approx.
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner (Included)
  • Max. Elevation: 2,380m/7,809ft

The Langtang Valley Trek is nearing the end, as today is the second last day. As usual, you will have an early breakfast, then begin your hike. Through the dense forest filled with the sweet sounds of birds and the Langtang River, you will make your way down. Stopping at some tea houses to drink some lemon water to replenish your thirst and recharge yourself, you will enjoy the hike a little more.

After a long downhill trek, you will finally arrive at Syabrubesi. You can finally relax and let loose. You can take a shower and order your favorite food and beverages, then enjoy the rest of the evening exploring the area or doing whatever you please. Finish packing all your things for tomorrow, as it is an early ride back to the capital city.

  • Accommodation: Trekking Lodge (Tea house)
  • Trekking time: 6-7 hrs approx
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner (Included)
  • Max. Elevation: 1520m/4985ft

The final day of the Langtang Valley Trek, you will get on an early bus after your breakfast. The ride back to Kathmandu will be the same as on your first day. After 6-7 hours of riding, you will finally enter the bustling Kathmandu Valley. Once you get off at the bus stop, you will be taken back to your hotel in Thamel, where you can finally wash away all the tiredness from the trek and stroll around Thamel streets, visiting souvenir shops, eating your favorite foods you missed on the trail, or even make plans for another trek.

Note: It is recommended to keep at least one day as a buffer day in case of emergencies such as delay due to road blockade.

  • Accommodation: Hotel
  • Driving Duration: 6-7 hrs approx
  • Meals: Breakfast, and Lunch (Included)
  • Max. Elevation: 1450m/4285ft

Reviews

  • Loan Truong - November 02, 2023

This was the second time I return to Nepal, previous trip to ABC was also managed by Alpine Ramble. It could not be more perfect because it was really perfect for everything during the time we stayed in Nepal. Alpine Ramble took care it all! Their guides and porters are super helpful, attentive and friendly, I appreciate all of their efforts to accompany us from the beginning till the end. Their manager, Dil, is another story. Without him, our expeditions would not be well taken care and full of nice experiences along the way. All sudden problems were solved timely and effectively. I definitely return for many next achievements in Hymalayas which come true thanks to Alpine Ramble.

  • Outstanding service from my first enquire - October 12, 2017

    • As soon as I emailed asking questions about a trek in Langtang valley I would get immediate response from Dill and his team (even a WhatsApp) so communication was great.

Literally on my arrival everything was taken care off ride from the airport to hotel etc etc.

I met my guide Samir he treated me like a king it was a little bit of a culture shock at first but his hospitality was absolutely second to none he was extremely attentive made sure I had everything I needed and helped me out on the trek the whole way, I was sick the last couple of days of the trek he wouldn’t even let me carry my own bag he insisted on carrying it and I could genuinely see he was concerned for my health
( I was fine in the end). Samir was good fun also on the trek teaching me a trekking song and telling me about his family too. He was just a great host I can not express that enough.

I would not think twice about using ALPINE RAMBLE again they really welcomed me and i feel like a very valuable customer and great value for money. They did not spare expense on getting the best rooms on the trek I was never left hungry or needing anything.

Absolutely incredible trip i would recommend Samir as a guide and Dill and his team in a heat beat.

      FANTASTIC

Nepal is one of the most beautiful and culturally diverse countries I have visited. The people are genuine and have so much knowledge to offer! I have worked and trekked with Dil several times over the past four years. He is a champion!
