Itinerary

Expand all +Collapse all -

Your trek to Poonhill begins from Pokhara. After an early breakfast and boarding a Jeep, you will find yourself on the scenic road to Pokhara. We will ride for about an hour and a half and reach Nayapul. Native to Magars and Gurungs, you will see the reflection of their culture in every step. The village of Nayapool sits just on the riverside of the Modi River. The lush green forests surround you, giving you a proper feeling of being in the wilderness.

You will also be entering a protected area. The Ghorepani-Poonhill trek route falls within the boundary of the Annapurna Conservation Area, which is also the biggest conservation area of Nepal. Therefore, your entry permits, TIMS card, and other security checking will be done at Nayapul. Once the procedure is over, our trek officially begins. And today’s destination is a small settlement area known as Tikhedhunga, which translates to “sharp or pointed stone.” Depending on your pace of walking, we can also trek up to Ulleri, which takes longer and is a bit challenging considering the steep uphill climb.

The highlight of today’s trek is that you can see the local people out and about doing their daily tasks, such as rearing their crops in the fields, looking after the domestic animals, and other tasks. It will be an authentic experience before you make it to your destination and check into a tea house for the night.

  • Distance: 9 km approx
  • Accommodation: Tea house
  • Time: 6-7 hours (2 hours drive and 4-5 hours trek)
  • Meal: Lunch, and Dinner
  • Altitude: 1480 meters

After an early rise and a delicious breakfast filling our stomachs, we set out for the day. Assuming we stayed at Tikhedhunga, we have a rigorous climb ahead of us. Upon crossing two suspension bridges, we will arrive at the starting point of the climb to Ulleri, which is stairs, stairs, and more stairs. But the fresh air of the mountains and the thick forest filled with rhododendrons and oak trees will make it all worth it.

Upon reaching Ulleri, you will see the first glimpse of the Annapurna South in its full magical glory. Stopping for a quick break, we will again resume our trek and reach Banthati, where we will again stop for lunch. And from then onwards, it is the final push to Ghorepani.

Ghorepani is at the top of a hill, but the walk there is very pleasant. Once you reach Ghorepani and check into the lodge, you can step out to look around. As popular as Poonhill is for it’s amazing views, Ghorepani is also not anything short when it comes to spectacular views of the snow-clad peaks.

You can fully see the Annapurna Range, Gangapurna, Himchuli, and other equally beautiful peaks from Ghorepani. So explore around as much as you can before returning to your lodge and settling in for the night as early as you can because the next day you have to wake up before the sun rises.

  • Distance: 12 km approx

  • Accommodation: Lodge
  • Time: 5-6 hours approx
  • Meal: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner
  • Altitude: 2874 meters

Finally, the day we have all been waiting for. Today we will not have any breakfast as we will wake up while it is still dark out. And depending on the season, the time of sunrise will vary, so always confirm the time of sunrise and wake up accordingly. And also make sure to pack a few granola bars and hot water for the way the night before. It is only an hour hike at most to reach the top of Poonhill; therefore, you will not be needing anything apart from your water bottle, energy bars, your phone, and cameras. Thus, carrying a light daybag is recommended.

With your headlamp on your head, you will step out in the cold, dark morning and start the hike to the top of the hill. As you climb higher, the rays of sunlight will come creeping in, painting the sky a lighter shade of dark blue. Upon making it to the top, all the mountains will be clearly visible, and now its just a matter of time before rays of the sun hit the white snow at the peaks of each mountain. The multichromatic rays of the sun hit the summit of the Annapurna South, Annapurna I-IV, Gangapurna, Himchuli, Dhaulagiri, Machhapuchhre, and others. It is one of the most beautiful scenes you will ever see in your life. After spending some time at Poonhill, we will eventually make our way back to the lodge, where we will have breakfast, pack our bags, and start descending.

We will trek down till we arrive at a place called Hile, where our ride will be waiting for us. Then we will get into the Jeep and drive back to the city of Pokhara. We express our gratitude for choosing Alpine Ramble Treks as your companion for this trek. We hope this trek was a splendid experience and hope we can assist you to other destinations in the near future as well.

  • Kalaivanan S - August 13, 2019

“It was my first time in Nepal for trekking, found Alpine Ramble Treks online. The reviews was pretty good and I decided to go for it. They have picked up to and from the airport to hotel and the starting town Pokhara. I’m generally happy with the arrangement thanks to Dil. I have to give the full mark for that! the guide is friendly, helpful, caring and knowledgeable thanks to Nauser. I don’t have to worry about anything, he took care of the guest houses, the meals, and the route. I did my trek in early October. I was very lucky to have a clear sky in most of the day including the day I went to Poon Hill for sunrise. The trip definitely an experience I’ll never forget in my whole life

  • Markush - January 20, 2018

The trip to Ghorepani and Poonhill was fantastic. Dill, the owner of Alpine Ramble, personalised my trip as I also wanted to see Ghandrouk and Chomrok, which was amazing. I really had a lifetime experience. The sunrise was breathtaking. The key to this experience were my two guides, Saugat and Addit, who both made this trip unforgettable. Both of them worked really hard. Thank you again, I highly recommend them to anyone. They are funny, energetic and extremely professional. Ask for Saugat and Addit when you book your trip.

  • Katharina Sartisson - February 12, 2017

Also a huge thank you to our trekking guide Dilman and ayush! We had so much fun with them on our trek and it’s just so comfortable to do this experience with a company like alpine ramble! We would always book it through dil again and really recommend it to everyone! It’s such a special and enjoyable time! Thank you guys!!!

  • Philip - November 25, 2016

I have trekked with Dil as guide in Nepal. The first in 2014 was the Annapurna region. It was obvious early that he was an experienced leader, well informed and explaining the trek clearly. He was both caring and considerate. The day I was too crook to walk, he quickly arranged transport with a local jeep. When private space was needed, he provided it. I had no concern about my first ascent above 5000 m with his good advice.
Dil is well informed about Nepal. He is from a mountain village and loves showing others the majesty of the Himalaya. He communicates well, is friendly and fun. At the start of both walks, he said that we will walk as a family. We did, but quickly became good friends.
Next time in Nepal, I will walk with Dil and his team.

For a while i have been planning my third visit to Nepal and was looking forward to doing the ABC trek, That's when i had come across a friend of mine who had recommended me to Alpine Ramble. Upon contacting Dil, CEO & founder of Alpine Ramble he was very quick with his replies and always at our service. He created a itinerary for us which fits perfectly to our schedule. Upon arrival in Kathmandu we was greeted by dil, along with Lakshman. Over the next few days we had started the trek and was led by the men of the mountains the very experienced, qualified and well trained boys, Ceo/guide - Dil along with Porter/Guide - Lakshman. These boys knew exactly everything about the mountains. They where very informative, motivative, patience and always extremely supportive during the entire course.
